Abstract

This paper explores the functional-semantic features of English action verbs that express the beginning and end of actions. It focuses on two key categories: ingressive verbs, which denote the onset of an action, and terminative verbs, which indicate its completion. These verbs are essential for structuring temporal relationships and defining semantic boundaries in discourse. The study outlines their theoretical foundations and examines their syntactic and pragmatic roles across different contexts. By analyzing various examples from narrative texts, the research illustrates how such verbs enhance coherence, clarify action progression, and contribute to the thematic development of the text. The findings emphasize the importance of these verbs in conveying time-related meaning and ensuring clarity in communication.
