QUOTATION IN CLASSICAL ENGLISH LITERATURE: A DIALOGIC AND STYLISTIC EXPLORATION
Keywords:
quotation, classical English literature, intertextualityAbstract
This paper explores the function of quotation in classical English literature, particularly in the works of William Shakespeare and John Milton. It argues that quotation in these texts functions not merely as ornamentation, but as a core stylistic and narrative mechanism. Drawing on theories of intertextuality and dialogism, the paper demonstrates how quotations from classical mythology, biblical scripture, and philosophical treatises shape character development, thematic resonance, and ideological commentary. The study reveals how classical quotations are used to create intellectual continuity and literary innovation simultaneously.
